Dominican Republic: the strategic refuge for European tourism in 2026

The Caribbean country leads long-haul travel searches across the Old Continent, driven by a combination of legal security, air connectivity and the shift toward long-stay models.

The tourism landscape is undergoing a paradigm shift. According to the latest mobility and travel-trend data, Punta Cana remains firmly among the most searched destinations from the Old Continent. The Caribbean country has stopped being perceived exclusively as a seasonal destination and has become, in addition, a strategic hub for long-term investment and residence for the European market. With a record close of 8.8 million international visitors in the last year, the country has not only recovered its pre-pandemic levels, but has transformed its tourism business model toward a higher value-added standard.

Punta Cana as the epicenter of international demand

Within Dominican geography, Punta Cana continues to hold undisputed leadership, concentrating 72% of the country's total tourist flow. Its appeal to European countries —led by Spain, France and Germany— lies in top-level airport infrastructure and an offering that combines natural heritage with a climate stability of 25 degrees annual average. However, one of the figures that most interests analysts is the tourism sector's contribution to GDP, which already reaches 16%, guaranteeing an environment of services and public safety in constant improvement within the country.

A step from "all-inclusive" to urban integration

The profile of the European visitor has evolved notably in recent years. They no longer seek only the isolation of traditional hotel complexes, but a real integration into the environment. This naturalist trend has fostered the development of infrastructure that prioritizes sustainability and well-being, where access to health, education and advanced digitalization services are indispensable requirements for stays exceeding three weeks, making it possible to combine leisure and work in increasingly longer stays. The Dominican Republic has known how to read this need, adapting its regulatory framework to attract not only tourists, but families and professionals seeking a second home in the tropics.

The Caribbean as a safe-haven and profitability asset in the coming years

Legal security is, perhaps, one of the determining factors in the destination's rise. Dominican legislation treats foreign and domestic investment equally, and the repatriation of capital is not penalized, which offers an environment of confidence for foreign capital that is hard to find in other markets in the region. To this is added a stable regulatory framework oriented toward attracting long-term tourism and residential investment.

This stability allows European investors to diversify their portfolios into real estate assets that, beyond their use value, offer sustained capital appreciation thanks to the uninterrupted growth of demand in the eastern part of the country.

The rise of the Caribbean "Safe Haven": why Europe is looking at the DR

The increase in European interest in the Dominican Republic is not a temporary phenomenon, but a response to the search for "value refuges" in a volatile global context. For the EU traveler and investor, the country has managed to position its political stability and sustained economic growth as a guarantee of asset security that surpasses other competing markets. To this is added a determining psychographic factor: the desire for an environment with climate security and 24/7 connectivity that allows "workation" (work and vacation). The Dominican Republic has stopped being a one-week destination to become the epicenter of a new Mediterranean lifestyle transferred to the Caribbean, where the pace is more relaxed and quality of life is the absolute priority.

Larimar City: an ecosystem that condenses the aspiration of the modern traveler

From this perspective, Larimar City & Resort presents itself not as a real estate product, but as the technical answer to all the demands the European market makes of a top-level destination. The project condenses the essence of Punta Cana —its light, its vegetation and its views— and enhances it with a complete infrastructure that eliminates the uncertainty of the international resident. By integrating critical health and education services from its initial phase, together with a leisure offering that includes an 18-hole golf course and more than 3 kilometers of promenade, Larimar materializes the promise of a frictionless life. It represents the transition from the traditional Caribbean toward a "Smart City" model where sustainability, nature-based biophilic design and digitalization ensure that the user's well-being is at the center of urban planning.
